QB Clayton opts not to return for fifth year at Tech

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Virginia Tech junior quarterback Ju-Ju Clayton has decided not to return to the team next season, according to coach Frank Beamer’s website.

Clayton, a Richmond native who spent the last two seasons as the Hokies’ third-string quarterback, is scheduled to graduate in May and will not continue his football career elsewhere.

Defensive tackles Dwight Tucker, Isaiah Hamlette and Courtney Prince will also not return to Tech next season.

Both Prince and Hamlette have already graduated and plan to transfer to Football Championship Subdivision schools. Tucker, who is on track to graduate in May, will not continue his football career elsewhere.

Clayton, a former Times-Dispatch All-Metro Offensive Player of the Year, was one of the top quarterback recruits in the country as a Hermitage High senior.

But his career never got on track at Tech. He served as a backup to Tyrod Taylor in 2009 and spent the last two years as the team’s third-string quarterback.

Clayton attempted only five career passes. His one career completion was an 80-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Davis in the Hokies’ home win over Boston College in 2009.

Wilson to announce plans

Will David Wilson stay for his senior season or go pro? Virginia Tech’s junior tailback will answer that question at a press conference today at 11 a.m.

Wilson, who rushed for a school single-season record 1,709 yards this season, is considered one of the top draft-eligible running backs. ESPN analyst Todd McShay projects Wilson as a first-round pick in this April’s draft.

Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley has already announced he will forego his senior season for the NFL.

Extra points

Running back J.C. Coleman and defensive end Dewayne Alford have signed their acceptance letters and are ready to enroll at Tech for second semester. The 5-foot-7, 175-pound Coleman, a four-star recruit out of Oscar Smith High in Chesapeake, could compete for the starting job if Wilson leaves. … The Hokies spring game is scheduled for April 21 at 4 p.m.
